History of Prince Philip

Prince Philip (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark) is the 5th child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

He studied in Germany, England and Scotland, then joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18, in 1939. He served in the Mediterranean and Pacific fleets during the Second World War.

He began to correspond with Princess Elizabeth, eldest daughter and heir presumptive to King George VI, in the summer of 1939 - and obtained, after the war, the permission of the marry.

Before the official announcement of the engagement, he renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and predicates, converted to Anglicanism and became a naturalized British subject (adopting the surname Mountbatten from his British maternal grandparents).

He married Princess Elizabeth on November 20, 1947 (5 months after their engagement) and received the predicate of Royal Highness and the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

His wife made him Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957, and Lord Grand Admiral in 2011.

He dies in April 2021, 2 months before his 100th birthday.
