The Church of England has 42 cathedrals. How did we get them?

The answer turns out to be a fascinating story lasting over 1400 years: of dangers, survivals, and renewals, ending in what we have today.

Nicholas Orme is one of our leading historians. His 'History of England's Cathedrals' is the first attempt to write their history from Roman times to the present day, and he is also the author of the recent highly-praised 'Going to Church in Medieval England', currently shortlisted for national prizes.

His classic study of medieval children has been widely praised, and he has worked and published on the history of cathedrals for many years. He is an emeritus professor of history of Exeter University and has been elected as a corresponding fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.
