Understanding the key concepts of product

Compared to other disciplines, the product management role is still fairly young, and is generally misunderstood. As companies across the world continue to move towards product-centered strategy, teams need to understand what that approach means for the company as a whole. It is important that questions like: 'what does product do?' and 'how can we work together effectively?' are discussed in order to drive product forward.

This half-day seminar is designed for professionals who are looking to gain an overview of product management, and the key concepts and frameworks surrounding it. Product for Non-Product People is particularly suited to those who work collaboratively with product managers, people working in a product-driven company but not in a product role, and people looking to move their career into product management.

You will gain a high-level understanding of the product process, a general interpretation of how product teams are structured, and an understanding of how outside roles should work with product teams.

What we’ll cover on the day

Product for Non-Product People is a half-day seminar comprised of multiple modules. The seminar will be lecture-led by our expert product trainers and interspersed with time for self-reflection and assessment.  We will cover:

  • The Product Management Role: the definition of a ‘Product Manager’ (what the role includes), and the main frameworks commonly used by product managers

  • The Wider Product Team: what product culture means for teams, a structure of best practice for product teams, and what cross-functional autonomous teams look like

  • The Importance of Learning: how learning drives product and how to collaborate with product teams on learning

  • The Importance of the User: how to position users at the centre of your organisation’s process, where users fit in, how to speak to customers, and how to define what your customer's challenges and needs are

  • Thinking like a Product Person: how to adopt a testing mindset, and how to start visualising ideas

Who is this for?

Mind the Product training workshops usually cater to working product managers who are either in the early stages of their careers or well-established in their positions. Product for Non-Product People is an exciting opportunity for those who work collaboratively with product managers or as a non-product person in a product company to gain a firm understanding of the product sphere. This seminar is also useful to those interested in moving into a product role or to anyone who would benefit from having an overview of product practice.

Key Takeaways

At the end of the workshop, you will have a good understanding of what a product manager is responsible for, the work they do, and of their motivations and challenges. You’ll understand the focus of product teams, have a general understanding of how product teams are structured, and - equally as important - how outside roles should work with product.

Mind the Product Trainers

Every Mind the Product trainer is a working product manager who has worked with multiple products and domains. Your trainer’s product management experience enriches the curriculum by delivering diverse perspectives on best practice in different scenarios. You will hear about the products they have worked on in the past, what went well, what didn’t go so well, and how they tried to make improvements. Our trainers’ main goal is not to provide participants with all of the answers, but help facilitate them in asking the right questions.
