We are honoured to welcome Kate Elizabeth Russell during her brief trip to the UK to discuss her era-defining novel My Dark Vanessa (4th Estate) described as "a package of dynamite” by author Stephen King. Kate will be in conversation with What Page? podcast co-host and regular Gower Street chair, Alice Slater, who has been following Kate's progress during many of the 18 years she took writing her astonishingly relevant debut novel.
Described as a "21st Century Lolita", My Dark Vanessa is narrated by a woman who cannot forget the man she remembers as her great love: the teacher she had an affair with when she was 15. 17 years later, in 2017, he is accused by another former student of abuse, and the novel splits its time frame across telling Vanessa's story of entrapment, and of her reflection as a grown woman.
Kate has said: "My Dark Vanessa is such a personal novel, one I've worked on for over half my life, years writing and rewriting fuelled by the belief that this story was important and worth telling."
Alice and Kate will discuss Kate's phenomenal dedication and writing process; themes of power and sexual awakening, manipulation and justice; and will explore the startling relevance of the novel in 2020's political climate. There will be an opportunity for audience Q&A, and Kate will be signing copies of My Dark Vanessa afterwards.
Tickets are £20 including a discounted copy of My Dark Vanessa, £10 general admission, or £8 students and Plus cardholders. All tickets including booking fees and a glass of wine/soft drink
