Hilton Als Lecture: Part 1 of 2

In 1969 and 1971, Dominique and John de Menil supported two exhibitions that changed any notion of what an artist curated show, or a show about race in America, might entail. Organized by Andy Warhol and Larry Rivers, 1969's "Raid The Icebox I", with Andy Warhol, and "Some American History", continue to prompt discussions on what constitutes a "queer" vision and sensibility, and how race and "otherness" have been handled in museum culture generally. In this two-part lecture, Hilton Als describes these two projects, curatorial practice in general, and his relationship to these two shows, all within the context of Dominique de Menil's personal and intellectual growth as a result of supporting these projects.
