What is the minimum length of a notice period in the UK?

If you want to resign or if you are made redundant, read your employment contract again to obtain the information concerning the length of your notice period.

If no information is included in your employment contract, be aware that there are legal minimum periods for notice periods, calculated according to the length of time worked by the employee:

  • between 1 month and 2 years of continuous work: the minimum duration is one week
  • more than 2 years of continuous work: the minimum duration is one week per year worked - with a maximum duration of 12 weeks
  • less than 1 month of continuous work: no legal duration is defined by law

The employer or employee may not give notice of less than the periods described above.

If the employee is on a probation period, the minimum periods described above also apply.
