University of Coimbra: Royal Palace and Scientific Circuit
Visit the oldest Portuguese-speaking university in the world
Historical Buildings
Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is the oldest Portuguese-speaking university in the world, and the oldest in the country. Tour the UNESCO-listed campus, and gain exclusive access to the university's historic Joanina Library, considered to be one of the most beautiful libraries in existence. Paintings and golden details adorn the walls of the Joanina Library, which was built in memory of King John V in 1728. Ornate wooden shelves, and two levels of floor-to-ceiling bookcases holding 60,000 texts highlight Baroque architecture and design.
