More info

Gasshozukuri Minkaen Outdoor Museum in Ōno District is home to gasshō-zukurii-style houses – typical edo period farmhouses – with iconic A-frame roofs that resemble clasped hands and have the practical advantage of easily shedding snow from their roofs. * The open-air museum has 26 buildings on show, including nine listed buildings that are designated as important cultural assets of Gifu Prefecture. * Alongside the Minka (the dwellings of farmers, artisans, and merchants – i.e., the three non-samurai castes) homes, you'll find a watermill, a shrine, and a temple's main hall that have been preserved in their original state. * This retreat to nature, not far from Takayama, is the ideal way to experience the culture of ancient Japan. Shirakawa-go also has its own hand-made soba restaurant, a shop, and rest areas for your convenience.
