More info

Located between the Piazza Venezia and Largo Argentina, the Balbi Crypt was constructed in the 1st century B.C. by Lucius Cornelius Balbus, as a place where the public could relax and enjoy refreshments during show intervals at the nearby theatre. Thousands of years later, it's your turn to take a break and explore this ancient marvel. Start your experience with a 25-minute multimedia video about ancient Rome in the Touristation Office. Then, explore three floors of urban archaeological exhibitions inside the Balbi Crypt itself. Admire artefacts and materials recovered during excavations and finds from the historical collections of the National Roman Museum. Visitors can examine the lives of ancient tenants of this city block, from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages. The museum displays archaeological objects used in daily life, and fans of the macabre can also explore the subterranean crypt and spooky cisterns!
