Fort Saint-André has been listed as a historic monument since 1903, and you can't miss it. Literally! This majestic medieval fort looms large over the Rhône from atop the rocky outcrop of Mount Andaon. Commissioned by the French King Philippe le Bel to display his power, Fort Saint-André is an exceptional testimony to both his deep pockets and the military architecture of the 14th century. * Once a symbol of royal power, the fort had a permanent garrison, a court of justice and a prison. You can still see the graffiti from the prisoners who were locked up here in the 18th and 19th centuries! Explore the fully intact rooms and buildings, step into the chapel, and take the parapet walk for mind-blowing views of the Pope's Palace, the bridge of Avignon, the Philippe Le Bel Tower, Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, the Luberon, and more.
