The Event

Help knit and crochet blankets for people experiencing houselessness across London.

Welcome to The Big Cathedral Knit! Grab your knitting needles and join us at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 17 August anytime between 10am - 4pm for a day of fun and creativity.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced maker, everyone is welcome to come together and work on their projects in this beautiful setting. Share tips, learn new techniques, and enjoy the company of fellow knitting and crochet enthusiasts.

It’s a relaxed and welcoming drop-in knitting and crochet group, open to beginners and experienced makers of all ages to come together, connect, learn more about the crafts and their radical history.

The Big Cathedral Knit is a knitting and crochet marathon workshop by Craft Forward and hosted at Southwark Cathedral.

Knitters will be producing 20x20cm knitted and crocheted squares to go towards Blankets for London - Craft Forward’s seasonal project where they assemble blankets to donate to unhoused individuals in London through partner charities.

All materials are provided, but if you are an experienced knitter or crocheter, please bring your own knitting needles or crochet hook (and spare yarn if you have any). If you are a beginner, come along and we will help you start your crafting journey.

We will also be collecting yarn donations on the day, so be sure to come with unwanted yarn you'd like to donate.

Whislt you knit or crochet away, be prepared to be entertained by the smooth jazz sounds of the award-winning and acclaimed saxophonist Leo Richardson and his trio including piano and double bass in the Cathedral churchyard.

During this event you can also hear the mighty sounds of the Cathedral organ and listen to some beautiful choral music from a visiting choir as they rehearse for our Choral Evensong service at 4pm which all are welcome to attend.

Refreshments will be served from our kiosk in the Churchyard or from our cafe located in our courtyard on the north side of the Cathedral opposite the River Thames.

This event will be taking place in the Cathedral and Churchyard located opposite Borough Market. You are free to join us anytime between 10am-4pm for the Big Cathedral Knit. It is expected to be very busy as the Cathedral will be open to all visitors on the day and we can't guaruntee those taking part in the knit a seat, but there will be plenty of indoor and outdoor space weather permitting.

The Robes Project

Meet staff and volunteers from The Robes Project who will joining us on the day to explain to visitors what they do. The Robes Project (Robes) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) that has been serving those experiencing homelessness in Southwark and Lambeth since 2007.

The aim of Robes is to relieve poverty among people who are experiencing homelessness in the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth by the provision of winter night shelters, food, advice, support, and re-settlement services to help them rebuild their lives.

Southwark Cathedral is a proud supporter of Catcuddles, a registered charity that is all about promoting and strengthening the feline-human bond and helping pair up unwanted cats with loving forever homes and humans. We'll be accepting cat food donations on the day to add to their cat food bank and members of Catcuddles will be onsite to talk to you about all the great work they do.

Threads Through Creation

The Big Cathedral Knit is an event to mark the display of our Threads Through Creation exhibition by textile artist Jackie Parkinson. Threads through Creation is a spectacular sequence of twelve huge textile panels. It’s an exuberant retelling of the creation story in the book of Genesis, a retelling which many visitors will find both moving and breathtaking. Viewers are treated to a wonderful variety of colours, shapes, patterns – and of course lots of creatures! Threads Through Creation will be on display at the Cathedral from 20 July - 26 August.
